Drew Storen Named Second-Team Freshman All-American By Rivals.com

Stanford right-handed pitcher Drew Storen has been tabbed a second team Freshman All-American selection by Rivals.com, the publication announced today. This is the second such honor for Storen, who was also given Freshman All-America accolades by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.

With the calendar nearly at July, and with all 30 Major League clubs reaching the halfway point of the 162-game 2008 season, Stanford baseball is continuing to make an impact on biggest professional stages. As of June 30, 26 former Cardinal players were active at either the Major or Minor league level, including nine that had seen big league action at some point during the campaign.

    Despite a valiant comeback effort in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon, the Stanford baseball team's 2008 season came to an end with a 10-8 loss to Georgia at the College World Series in Omaha. The Cardinal found itself in a five-run hole after five innings, and despite a four-run rally with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Stanford could not complete the comeback at Rosenblatt Stadium.

    For a team that was picked seventh in the Pac-10, pre-season, finishing third or fourth nationally isn't a bad way to end your season. While the sting of today's 10-8 loss to Georgia is going to be tough for all associated with the program, the accomplishments of this year's Stanford baseball team should not go unnoticed. The team returned to the College World Series for the first time since 2003 and fell just four victories short of a national championship. This was after a 2007 season where they rode a late season winning streak to finish 28-28 after spending most of the year under .500.

    Stanford and Georgia meet once more at the 2008 College World Series Saturday afternoon at 11 a.m. PT at Omaha's Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium. The Cardinal, with one loss at the CWS already, must defeat the Bulldogs twice beginning Saturday in order to advance to next week's College World Series Final. Stanford, currently 5-0 in elimination games in the 2008 postseason, defeated Miami, 8-3, Wednesday night to advance to Saturday's game.
